Facts and Stats

 

 

In Michigan, there are an estimated 250,000 young people, ages 16-24, who are without a high school diploma or GED and are presently neither enrolled in school nor employed.

Studies suggest that

as few as

30% of previously incarcerated youth

become and stay

involved in either school or work 

In a 2008 report, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association stated: As inadequate as adult representation is, the treatment of kids in delinquency proceedings is far worse.

There are currently approximately 400 youth ages 14-18 incarcerated in adult correctional facilities in MIchigan

"The average stay in prison is four years. We currently spend $37,500 per year to house each prisoner, which is much higher than tuition and board for any higher educational institution in our state."
