THE PROJECT
Every second of every day, there are thousands of children and youth among us who have not found their voice. These at-risk youth are more likely to disengage at home, at school and turn inward.
At the inception of the juvenile justice system, the goal was to rehabilitate these juveniles and provide them with the tools to reintegrate into their community. As time has passed and policy has shifted, our juvenile justice system has become punitively focused vs. rehabilitative. Furthermore, a trickle affect has begun and our youth are far more susceptible to the school to prison pipeline.
Our project is to begin to find alternative ways/tools for our youth to find their voice. How do we prevent the cycle of silence that puts our youth at-risk? How do we intervene and help those youth who are lacking the necessary coping tools? How do we use the power of the creative arts as tools for rehabilitation within our community and in the juvenile justice system?
SCBF looks to answer these questions by providing the power tools and creative outlets for our youth to reengage at home, at school and in their community while inspiring C.H.A.N.G.E. within.

THE HARD TRUTH
82%
OF THOSE INCARCERATED ARE HIGH SCHOOL DROP-OUTS
up to 70%
OF ALL YOUTH IN JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER
50-70%
OF YOUTH WILL REOFFEND WITHOUT PROPER SUPPORT
Studies have identified key factors in youth entry into the juvenile justice system, we hear about these all the time: poverty, race, unstable home environment, or mental health to name a few.
We hear about horrific cases of abuse and neglect, kids without a chance and "lost causes."
SCBF is challenging our community to start talking and inspiring change within this system. Through alternative programming coupled with traditional interventions, we can change the conversation from a reactive one to a proactive one. Join us in our fight for Prevention. Intervention. Rehabilitation through creative programming and giving our youth the tools to find their own voice!
